The 9800X3D is our top choice as the best gaming CPU on the market right now, fitted with eight cores, 16 threads, and boost clock speeds up to 5.2 GHz, but it’s the 3D V-Cache that steals the attention here. This X3D chip comes with a boosted 96MB of L3 cache, ensuring that the CPU doesn’t need to fall back on slower system RAM, boosting frame rates and performance as a result. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is no slouch, either, as it’s currently AMD’s top GPU, and one of the best value choices for a gamer, with performance rivalling the RTX 5070 Ti for a lot less cash.

The CPU benchmark data below is clear: the 9800X3D is a performance beast for gaming, and without massive power demands. It offers the best performance per watt compared to its rivals, including over the newer AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D. In fact, our data shows that the difference in FPS between the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Ryzen 7 9850X3D is just 3%, and that’s at 1080p. The gap is closed even further at 1440p and 4K, which we’d expect you to be playing at with a rig like this.

The 9800X3D is paired well with the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, as you won’t be facing bottlenecks to hit high frame rates with decent graphics settings at 1440p. 4K is a possibility here, too, but you may need to adjust your graphics settings to cope if you see frame rates drop in any seriously intensive games. The build, including GPU and case, is almost exactly the same otherwise, although this is an all-white build versus the black colorway for the 9800X3D model. The AMD Ryzen 7 9900X is a downgrade compared to the 9800X3D, as it loses the huge advantage offered by the 96MB L3 cache capacity, but it’s no slouch. It can still deliver impressive gaming performance, however, sitting between the Intel Core i7-14700K and beating the newer Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus in our CPU benchmark results at 1080p. You’ll see boosted performance if you decide to overclock it using AMD’s built-in Precision Boost Overdrive on supported motherboards, too.
